The Life Skills teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities in a life skills classroom setting. The Life Skills teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities in a life skills classroom setting. This role involves teaching essential life skills, fostering independence, and promoting students' functional abilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Functional Academics Instruction:
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that focus on functional academics
- Design and deliver instruction using adapted curriculum materials, hands-on activities, and real-life applications
Daily Living Skills Development:
- Teach essential daily living skills to promote independence and self-sufficiency.
- Provide opportunities for hands-on practice in simulated and real-life settings.
Social Skills and Community Integration:
- Teach and model social skills, communication strategies, and appropriate behavior in various social settings.
- Facilitate community-based instruction and outings to help students develop practical skills for navigating public spaces, shopping, and accessing community resources.
Individualized Support and Behavior Management:
- Provide individualized support and behavior management strategies to address students' unique needs and challenges.
- Implement positive behavior support plans, visual supports, and sensory accommodations to promote a positive and supportive classroom environment.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with related service providers, paraprofessionals, and support staff to address students' needs and provide a comprehensive range of services.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians through meetings, progress reports, and informal updates to share insights into students' progress, behavior, and achievements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education, Education, or related field.
- Valid teaching license/certification for special education.
- Previous experience working with students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge of adapted curriculum materials, functional academics instruction, and transition planning.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment and adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
