Job Description:
The Chief of Schools for Universal will supervise and support network of 8 school principals by promoting high quality instructional practices; providing instructional leadership direction; and coaching, mentoring and supporting principals as they grow leadership skills. The work of the Chief of Schools is an integral part of the classroom-by-classroom effort to reform instruction and increase student achievement in both turn-around and traditional charter schools. The Chief of Schools is responsible for conducting the appraisals and evaluations of all school principals, supporting differentiated professional growth, and building the leadership capacity of school leaders.
Essential Functions
• Serve as strategic advisor, functional expert and thought partner to the superintendent, executive staff and principals
• In collaboration with the superintendent, develop, articulate and enact a compelling vision and theory of action for school leadership and school transformation
• Coach, mentor, support leadership capacity of principals and instructional leadership teams
• Develop instructional leadership team at each school to ensure they integrate data-driven focus on teaching/learning
• Serve as senior district leader and key member of leadership team focused on school instructional leadership and school transformation
• Effectively and efficiently collaborate with diverse group of co-workers and other stakeholders
Priority 1: High Quality Instruction for All Students
• Sustain high learning expectations for all students and enhance the consistency and rigor of classroom instruction by supporting full implementation of Universal Core Curriculum at each respective school
• Demonstrate knowledge of school-turnaround instructional models, pedagogical models and strategies to improve instructional delivery
• Effectively and efficiently collaborate with central staff, school leaders and instructional leadership teams to promote high quality instruction for all students.
Priority 2: Structures for School Improvement
• Manage and develop principals and instructional leadership teams through differentiated coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
• Coach principals to implement effective leadership practices with a focus on culture, curriculum, instruction and assessment
Priority 3: Leadership Development and Collaboration
• Coach, mentor and support development of principals and instructional leadership team
• Support orientation, induction and mentoring programs for all new staff
• Support robust program of school leader and educator development, aligned to the Universal’s Academic
Plan (turnaround plan).
• Work cooperatively with all chiefs in integrating and coordinating efforts into unified program for district
• Build coalitions and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at all levels, including but not limited to central office administrators, students, families, communities, and/or advocacy groups
• Communicate, both written and oral, with individuals and groups
Experience, skills, traits, and beliefs:
• Ability to be bold, innovative, and engaging change agent and culture-creator; a visionary leader with a track record of inspiring and motivating those around them.
• A commitment to high performance standards and unwavering belief that all students can excel.
• Experience coaching or managing high-performing instructional teams as a department, school, or network leader, ideally through a complex transformation effort
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to guide and inspire teachers, school staff, school leaders toward a common goal
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a track record of working collaboratively with staff at all levels to build consensus while also delivering exceptional results
• At least 10 yrs experience in education, reflecting successful teaching/ school leadership
• Minimum 3 yrs experience in district-level administration
• A valid PA Principal Certification; A valid Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility
