Job Description:
As a member of the school health team, the nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational development of the students by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. The nurse must uphold the professional standards established by the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice; and adheres to RCCS policies and administrative guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities [Other duties may be assigned]:
  • Provides services, within the scope of practice, to meet the medical and nursing needs of RCCS students and personnel.
  • Administers First Aid for injury or sudden sickness of students or personnel.
  • Complies with school policies and procedures and state laws relative to administration and dispensing of medicine to students.
  • Implements school health care plans, including Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHP), to provide appropriate care as directed by health care professional.
  • Participates in developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP), Chapter 15 Service Agreement (504), and in multidisciplinary meetings for students with special health care needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Maintains student health records (new and current) with the purpose of documenting activities and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Monitors health care plans to address students' health needs and implement health care directions from parents and/or physicians.
  • Participates in various emergency drills (e.g. lock downs, safety meetings, evacuation plans, crisis team, etc.) providing expertise in health-related issues.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. medication logs, compliance reports, student activities, monthly tally sheets, etc.) to document activities, provide written reference and/or convey information.
  • Reports incidents and students with contagious diseases to maintain students’ personal safety, and positive learning environment.
  • Responds to emergency situations to address immediate health and safety concerns.
  • Must practice in accordance with nursing regulations, Nurse Practice Act and the RCCS policies and procedures.
  • Assists students, families, and school personnel to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education and promoting a healthy and safe environment.
  • Collaborates with school office staff, principal, and/or parents regarding students identified for exclusion due to medical reasons.
  • Follows oral and written directions and establishes effective working relationships with RCCS staff and students.
  • Maintains a current health resource library of reference materials.
  • Ensure both incoming and outgoing health records are handled confidentially and in a timely manner.
  • Completes any necessary purchase orders for School Health Program.
  • Inputs medical data into the Information Management System.
  • Maintains files including authorization for medications, medical referral, parental waivers, physical letters, report of minor head injury, change of clothing, fax forms, and others.
  • Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contributes to the professional growth of others.
  • In charge of providing all necessary data for local, state and federal reporting of the assigned school.
  • Establishes, maintains and ensure a comprehensive School Health Program at assigned school with the oversight of the Certified School Nurse.
  • Responsible for the monitoring of the Health Services budget and use of resources at assigned school.
  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the school principal(s).
Qualifications Requirements:
  • Valid PA Registered Nurse License – Required
  • Current CPR/AED
  • Must have clear record of background checks, including criminal and child abuse clearances in accordance with Acts 34, 114, 151 and 168
  • Negative TB Test result
Additional or alternatives to the above qualifications as determined to be appropriate.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from accredited institution of higher learning.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:
PA Registered Nurse, PDE Certified School Nurse (Preferred), Current CPR/AED.
