Working under the direction of the Supervisor of Special Education, in consultation with the Dean of Students, the Behavior Specialist has the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities:
Working under the direction of the Supervisor of Special Education, in consultation with the Dean of Students, the Behavior Specialist has the following responsibilities:
Student/Family Support
- Create and monitor student behavioral plans
- Support Personal Care Assistants with strategies and interventions to help manage student behavior
- Respond to urgent situations involving students with whom s/he works
- Work with parents of the students with whom s/he works to establish proactive communication regarding student behavioral change, growth, and accountability
- Assist Dean of Students with handling minor student conflict (implementing conflict resolution skills and de-escalation techniques) and assigning disciplinary consequences, as needed
- Consult with staff who are stymied about how to manage a particular student’s behavior
- Work with teachers on improving their relationship, communication with, and management of students with challenging behaviors
- Support the Dean of Students with administrative tasks, parent contact, etc., as needed
- Ability to implement and maintain student and staff safety using de-escalation strategies, which may include the use of Safety Care restraint techniques.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, counseling psychology or related field
- Prior experience working in a school preferred
- Professional experience in behavioral health preferred
- Proven willingness and ability to collaborate with a diverse community of students, colleagues and parents/guardians
- Demonstrated knowledge of the current social, educational, and economic issues as they relate to urban families
- Proven track record of effectiveness in helping students achieve positive behavioral changes and growth that lead to social, emotional, and academic success
- Skill in human interaction and conflict management, using tact and patience.
- Ability to be flexible, handle a variety of tasks, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
