Essential Functions
Universal Family of Schools - Vare is seeking a dynamic and passionate Director of Academics to work in an urban school setting in Philadelphia, PA. The Director of Academics will work to create a warm and welcoming school culture that is driven by student achievement, and teachers are committed to high expectations and dedicated support for students! The Director of Academics and School Programs is responsible for implementing and overseeing all initiatives related to maintaining and improving the academic performance of scholars, including the development, coordination, articulation, and evaluation of curriculum, instruction, professional development, and assessment.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct the administration of curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Work collaboratively with principal, central administration, content-specific departments and instructional teams to transform and improve instruction and instructional programming.
  • Support the use of comprehensive data for the purposes of making instructional decisions
  • Lead the development of accountability mechanisms for measuring the performance of curriculum and instructional programs and staff
  • Assist with the integration of technology into all curricular and instructional areas
  • Counsel with individual teachers, coaches, or other professional staff in an attempt to identify performance strength and/or weakness, and assist in developing plans for professional improvement when necessary
  • Maintain awareness of developing educational trends or new ideas, and share information with appropriate administrative and teaching staff: Attend conferences, workshops, meetings, conventions, and related professional activities as requested or assigned.
  • Supervise applications of special project grants and, when appropriate, serve as Director for approved projects.
  • Oversee initiatives to improve school culture for students, staff and community.
  • Oversee branding and social media outreach.
  • Oversee the special education department.
  • Oversee all STEM initiatives.  
  • Conduct performance evaluations and reviews of staff.
  • Conduct interviews and make recommendations for hire.  
  • Assist in conducting Title meetings at the direction of the Principal.
  • Assist in the budget process at the direction of the Principal.
  • Work after school programs, special events and Saturday school as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications
  • Experience working in an urban setting and/or knowledge/sensitivity to urban school issues preferred.
  • Documented experience using data-driven instruction to achieve significant student gains
Requirements
  • Master’s Degree or doctorate in Education Administration (preferred), must have PA Principal Certification
  • Five (5) years teaching experience, two (2) years administrative/ leadership experience preferred
