Job Description:
The Principal is responsible to oversee and direct the school program and related operations providing a safe educational environment that is academically rigorous as well as therapeutic.  The Principal is expected to effectively partner with other program administrators creating a well-integrated program. The Principal, in collaboration with the Executive Director, is expected to achieve the priorities of the program and maintain compliant with stakeholder requirements.

  • Direct, coordinate and provide leadership to and review the work of assigned staff.
  • Ensure the implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP) as well as the implementation of student and parental rights.
  • Develop, evaluate and implement educational policies and procedures.
  • Perform teacher observations and offer feedback to ensure that curriculum standards are maintained.
  • Conduct staffing reviews and monitor student progress.
  • Act as a liaison between Wordsworth and various Local Education Agencies (LEA), Intermediate Units (IU), and social/mental/psychological service agencies.
  • Participate in the development and manage of the educational budget.
  • Participate as a member of the educational/administrative pupil personnel support group.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state special education regulations.
  • Oversee the intake/admissions process including: review of referrals, student/parent interview/tour, determining acceptance, grade/class assignment, etc.
  • Collaborate with vocational department to ensure that programming is academically sound and meets all PDE regulations and requirements.
Staff Leadership
  • Fosters a success-oriented, accountable, committed and motivated environment throughout the program.
  • Establishes and holds direct reports responsible to create a climate that attracts, retains and motivates high performance.
  • Ensures the caliber of diverse staff with skills appropriate to meet the needs of those served.
  • Provides and holds staff responsible to complete staff performance evaluations as expected, provide constructive supervision for all direct reports including ongoing performance feedback. 
  • Models Wordsworth’s core competencies holding staff accountable to do the same.
  • Mentors and develops direct reports to ensure a core team focused on meeting the priorities of the program. 
Administrative Activities
  • Ensures compliance with all Fairwold’s policies and procedures, including confidentiality and reporting suspected abuse in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Implements all documentation requirements, reports are complete, thorough, timely, and follow prescribed format. Ensures staffs do the same.
  • Strong organization and program management skills. Demonstrates the skills necessary to manage a safe and effective program for the population served.
  • Hires and develops a caliber staff capable of providing high quality services, accountable to job responsibilities and motivated to achieve high performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to quickly form trusting relationships with child/adolescent population based on understanding of developmental process and emotional needs.
  • Sufficient mobility, coordination and body strength to safely restrain a child or adolescent.
  • Ability to form effective working relationships with diverse students, families, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates personal integrity, initiative, problem solving, creativity, analytical skills and follow-through.
  • Ability to multi-task and be in control of numerous tasks at any one time.
  • Ability to handle a variety of duties which may be interrupted or changed by immediate circumstances.
  • Strong computer skills in all Microsoft office applications.
  • Ability to administer First Aid and CPR, if necessary.
  • Five years of full-time paid experience as an appointed school professional in the area of special education
  • Experience outside of the classroom in a leadership role (e.g. mentor teacher or Assistant Principal)
Education Requirement:
  • Completion of a Master’s degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university.
  • Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate in Special Education N-12 (Mentally, Physically Impaired, Learning Disabled).
  • Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Elementary and/or Secondary Principal certificate.
