One Bright Ray, Inc., a Philadelphia based non-profit organization that was established in 1980, offers alternative educational services to the city of Philadelphia. Harcum College @ One Bright Ray, an off-site campus of Harcum College, is a division of One Bright Ray, Inc. that offers Associate Degree programs in Early Childhood Education, Law and Justice, Human Services, and Business Management. Degree programs are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and may be applied toward a four-year degree at many area colleges.

Key components of the degree programs are: evening classes (5:30-9:30PM), curriculum relevant to work and life, small class sizes, on-site tutoring and academic support services, and a convenient location. Enrolled students will develop the 21st century skills required to succeed in today’s economy. These skills include creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, technology and media literacy, and life and career skills.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree

Years of Experience: 2+ years of teaching experience

Position: Part-time, evening hours only (up to 10 hours a week for the academic year, Aug-May)

Pay Range: $25 per hour

Primary Responsibilities
  • Build strong relationships with a cohort of 25-30 college students in order to increase student accountability and success
  • Make weekly contact with a cohort of students to follow up on their pending assignments and general progress in the program
  • Develop relationships with faculty and check in with them weekly regarding course assignments and concerns about student achievement
  • Develop instructional materials and supplemental instruction workshops to support students in their courses
  • Facilitate communication between students and professors with the goal of teaching
  • students self-advocacy and academic responsibility
  • Provide students with educational and classroom support services
  • Provide encouragement and accountability for students who drop in attendance or are struggling academically
  • Provide math, English, and reading tutoring to students enrolled in developmental coursework
  • Provide support with uploading, downloading, email submission, topic research, and basic technology navigation
  • Work alongside administration to do whatever else may be necessary to ensure the success of all students
Qualities of Learning Coach
  • Ability to build relationships with students based on trust and mutual respect
  • Talent as a teacher and helping students building English and reading skills
  • Effective communication skills when addressing both students and professors
  • Understanding of how to build strengths in others, in order to guide students toward increasing self-reliance
  • Reasonable facility with technology, research, math, and academic writing Adept at tracking and reporting information
  • The applicant must be available to work two evenings per week, 4:30-8:30PM
