Job Description:
A full-time, competitively paid position at a first-rate college preparatory school for boys.  

The Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Teaching Fellowship attracts and prepares teaching candidates who will address the sharp racial, socioeconomic, and gender disparities in public education in Philadelphia. The Fellowship, created in partnership with Drexel University and The Center for Black Educator Development, consists of a (1) Teaching Apprenticeship, which exposes candidates considering a career in teaching to the instructional and student engagement duties of a teacher and a (2) Teaching Residency, which begins the formal education and practice that will result in teacher certification.  

The High School Teaching Apprentice supports the climate and culture of the school community by helping to create the optimal conditions for teaching and learning. Reporting to the Assistant Principal and serving on the Climate and Culture Team, the Teaching Apprentice provides mentorship to a cohort of students and coverage for absent teachers, while enforcing the Student Code of Conduct and serving as a culture keeper for the Boys’ Latin mission. Upon successfully completing the two-year program, apprentices are invited to apply for admission to the Teaching Residency.  

The teaching apprentice will perform the following duties: 
  • Mentor a cohort of 25 students, checking in daily with each cohort member regarding academics, attendance, and behavior, and maintaining regular communication with their parents and teachers.
  • Provide coverage for absent teachers on an as-needed basis, preparing in advance by becoming familiar with classroom procedures and management and emergency lesson plans.
  • Explore the teaching role fully by observing classes, shadowing teachers, taking introductory certification courses, and preparing for and taking certification examinations.
  • Enforce the Student Code of Conduct and serve as a culture keeper of the Boys’ Latin mission.
  • Commit to the school’s extended day structure, serving students outside of the regular school day, and teaching in the Leadership Academy, Saturday School, and summer academy programs.

  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships with all members of the school community, including students, parents, faculty and staff members, administrators, and external partners.
