Job Description:
The mission of One Bright Ray Community High School, an independent, accelerated high school, is to provide quality education to Philadelphia’s, over-aged and under-credited students in search of a positive school experience while earning their diploma. We provide a supportive environment free of negative labels that challenge each student to explore his or her personal and academic potential through Project-Based Learning. We engage in restorative practices to create healthy respectful relationships that foster productivity, a positive outlook, and high self-esteem. We provide a second chance, sometimes a last chance, for our students in their pursuit of a high school diploma.

The Dean of Academics serves as an educational leader of the school and is responsible for assisting in the delivery of instruction, policies, regulations, and procedures of the OBR, Inc. Accelerated School Model. The Dean of Academics is to ensure that all faculty, staff and students are supervised in a safe learning environment that meets the mission of the school.
Achieving academic excellence requires that the Dean of Academics works collaboratively with his/her leadership team to direct and nurture faculty members, staff members, and stakeholders of the school community. The Dean of Academics must communicate effectively with the leadership team, show professionalism with faculty, staff, students and parents.

Qualifications: PA Teaching Certification, Preferred PA Principal’s Certification or enrolled in a certification program.    
Years of Experience: Minimum of 8 years classroom experience
Preferred 1-2 years instructional coaching experience

   The Dean of Academics…
  • Supports the implementation of One Bright Ray Community High School’s vision and mission and approved curricula set by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws, board policies, and civil regulations.
  • Assist in establishing an orderly school environment that encourages students to take responsibility for behavior and creates consistency with the philosophy, values, and mission of the school.
  • Establish a professional, respectful rapport with faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Completes in a timely fashion all records and reports if requested, by the Principal, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, CAO or CEO.
  • Must meet with the Principal, CAO, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction to discuss individual teacher performances and strategies for instructional improvements.
  • Assists the Principal in overseeing the implementation and delivery of the school’s instructional model, Professional Development and extracurricular activities.
  • Provides Professional Development to faculty and or staff prior to the start of the school year, on designated whole school PD days, any other times for new and returning teachers when needed, providing strategies/techniques that may improve student outcomes and faculty and staff performance. Works in conjunction with other DOAs at times in planning and delivery, supported by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Provides planning support meetings, feedback, and approval for Unit and Lesson Planning as faculty plan and implement instruction and the completion of mini-projects and Keystone style assessments.
  • Play a lead role in the MTSS Team process supporting student success.
  • Is responsible to complete a designated number of classroom walk-through observations for each faculty member each module and to provide effective feedback including instructional strategies that will improve teaching and learning.
  • Is responsible to conduct regular informal classroom visits, coaching meetings, and IGP (Individual Growth Plan) meetings to increase teacher effectiveness.
  • Covers a teacher’s classroom during an absence, or teacher vacancy until the position is filled.
  • Must document classroom visits as well as coaching, planning, and IGP meetings in the coaching and communication log online.
  • Must utilize PowerSchool to document interactions with students if/when assisting the leadership team with disciplinary or other student concerns.
