About the Position
The Director of Literacy is a member of the network’s Academic Team and reports to the Head of Academics.  This position supports the five campuses on Literacy practices across grades preK-12 by managing curriculum, leading professional development, coaching teachers, helping set vision and direction for Literacy improvements, and being the network’s resident Literacy expert.
  • Ensure network curriculum meets the rigor and standards and is aligned to the PA Core and Common Core standards
  • Manage implementation of Literacy Curriculum across grades and campuses
  • Curate supplemental materials to pair with curricular programs
  • Manage the creation of pacing guides; curricular guides; unit assessments and other curricular materials across grades and campuses.  
  • Research and propose new curricular resources to meet the needs of our students.
  • Ensure all teachers have appropriate materials necessary to use curriculum
  • Provide guidance in how to use technology within and outside of ELA block
  • With Directors, develop framework for ELA block in grades K-12
  • Manage ordering and delivery of curriculum materials in tandem with Directors. 
  • Collect ongoing feedback from teachers and leaders about the curriculum in order to drive revisions. 
  • Manage and develop interventions, along with the Director of Special Ed, to meet the needs of all of our students. 
Data & Assessment
  • Drive assessment strategy for ELA across grades in collaboration with school leaders
  • Revise and adapt curriculum assessments as needed
  • Lead an on-going data review cycle with school leaders utilizing classroom based and benchmark reading scores to drive support. 
  • In collaboration with the Directors, support the MTSS process for ELA
  • Collaborate with school leadership to coach and co-supervise ELA teachers across the network
Professional Development
  • Lead unit/module unpacking session with grade teams and instructional leaders
  • Lead ELA content meetings.
  • Develop Directors in ELA content so they can have effective coaching sessions. 
  • Provide targeted instructional support based on learning walk needs (individual coaching, modeling, small group practice sessions)
  • Research best practices in ELA instruction based on needs
  • Conduct excellent school visits with schools with similar student population to bring back ideas for improvement in implementation
  • Provide model lessons and co-teaching support on a needs basis; working in conjunction with the coach/supervisor.

Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor's Degree required; Master's preferred. Minimum of 3 years teaching Literacy in an urban environment with demonstrated student success; 3-5 years of leadership, management, or coaching in a school setting preferred; Experience creating and adapting literacy curriculum; must be able to demonstrate a capacity for leadership through previous professional experience.
  • B.A./B.S. degree from accredited institution, advanced degree in relevant field preferred;
  • Experience in urban education, experience in Philadelphia preferred;
  • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check Clearance (Act 34);
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151);
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation Record Check Clearance (Act 114);
  • Sexual Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Clearance (Act 168).
