JOB GOAL
Responsible for ensuring proper functioning of the pupil transportation program. Responsible for Public Relations, delivering effective professional communications both internally and externally to optimize relations between the I.U., school districts and surrounding communities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinates a transportation program to meet all local, state, and federal laws and regulations and the daily instructional program and extra-curricular activities.
Prepares bus routes for all public, non-public, private, homeless, early intervention, and special education schools servicing pupils transported by the Intermediate Unit.
Prepares and updates bus schedules for all public, non-public, private, homeless, early intervention, and special education schools in order for all pupils to be transported in the most efficient and effective manner possible and to ensure any legally required background clearances and related reports have been secured and properly processed. Works closely with drivers to ensure that schedules are carried out properly.
Ensures all vehicles are properly equipped for students with special needs and that drivers and aides are properly trained to use equipment to properly secure and transport students with special needs.
Schedules or coordinates with bus drivers to provide bus safety training sessions for students and parents.
Keeps an accurate count of pupils using the transportation program. Maintains records necessary to prepare all state reports as required by PDE.
Communicates with bus drivers and school principals regarding transportation changes and assists the central administration in locations served by I.U. transportation in matters dealing with school delays and closings. Advises the Executive Director about road hazards for decisions regarding school closings and delays during inclement weather. Uses prudent judgment and discretion for student safety to advise Executive Director regarding school delays, cancellations and early dismissals resulting from adverse weather conditions or emergencies.
Arranges transportation in case of any emergency/school closing/early dismissal/sick child.
Coordinates the planning for special school trips with school principals and other district personnel.
Communicates with and assists the principals and bus drivers related to discipline programs occurring on school buses and solutions.
Establishes and maintains a good rapport with students, teaching staff, and the community. Acts as liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.
Maintains updated transportation information on the web site, and any other communications deemed necessary to promote the overall student transportation program.
Enters data from transportation route sheets from drivers submitted by transportation contractors or each vehicle used into the computerized program.
Develops and maintains a well-organized, balanced and efficient program of internal and external communications through collaboration with administrators, professional employees and staff in promoting and advertising the mission and educational initiatives of the intermediate unit.
