CERTIFICATIONS:       Masters Degree
                                    Education Specialist I or II Certification with a major concentration in Secondary Guidance and Counseling
QUALIFICATIONS:       Previous counseling experience preferred
                                      Additional qualifications as set by law and Committee policy 
 POSITION GOAL:         The School Counselor  is responsible for assisting students, families, educational faculty and staff, the Principal, and the Director of Student Services and Special Education, in providing students with the necessary services and supports to be successful at CMAVTS and beyond, and to aide in overcoming student problems which would otherwise prevent optimal academic, educational, and social development. The School Counselor is also responsible for student recruitment, selection, enrollment, placement and scheduling, and may assist with the preparation of state reports.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist students in schedule planning and course selection, as well as program selection for ninth graders.
  • Assist in the registration and scheduling of all new students.
  • Assist in processing student applications from prospective students.
  • Provide support for students with special needs, such as teenage parents and homebound students, so that they may continue their educational programs.
  • Assist students in completing college applications, scholarship applications, financial aid applications, and military program applications as needed. Maintain an ongoing scholarship file.
  • Host college admissions representatives, Armed Services representatives, and other post-secondary programs for the purpose of meeting with students.
  • Provide information on SAT workshops, financial aid workshops, ACTs and ASVAP exams to students and families.
  • Facilitate, administer, and interpret ASVAP testing at CMAVTS as needed
  • Maintain career resource materials and assist students in using these resources. Conduct career exploration activities as appropriate.
  • Be available for students who wish to see a counselor. Provide an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality for any student.  Provide a supportive environment for students experiencing personal problems. Refer students to appropriate community resources as needed.
  • Communicate with families regarding student problems, issues, and/or needs, to include parent and teacher conferences as needed.
  • Assist in the selection of students for awards and scholarships as needed
  • Assist in maintaining school records as needed.
  • Assist in the coordination of articulation and dual-enrollment agreements with post-secondary institutions.
  • Coordinate, schedule and conduct student tours of CMAVTS for eighth grade students at our sending schools
  • Serve as a member of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) team to meet to plan and coordinate interventions for students experiencing intrusive problems or issues at school and/or at home.
  • Serve as a member of the Threat Assessment Team when threats and potential threats have been identified.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and trainings to keep abreast of current trends in career and technical education.
  • Performs other duties as related to the guidance and counseling services function of the school that may be assigned by the Director of Student Services and Special Education.
